The Bay Lights came back on March 20, 2026. After several dark years, Leo Villareal’s light sculpture once again ran along the western span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Illuminate, the San Francisco nonprofit behind the work, announced the date in February. Its announcement named Jean-Pierre Conte as “a key funder of the original Bay Lights in 2012” and listed him among the supporters who stepped in again.

Why He Gave Again

Conte is the founder and managing partner of his family office, Lupine Crest Capital, which launched in March 2025 and is based in Aspen, Colorado. A short statement from him was included in Illuminate’s announcement.

“Supporting The Bay Lights has always been about investing in the soul of San Francisco,” Jean-Pierre Conte said. He was one of many earlier donors who returned, Illuminate said.

His career has been spent mostly in private equity. His giving has stayed close to the Bay Area, where he lived for many years before settling in Colorado.

A Privately Funded Project

No public money was used for the rebuild. Illuminate put the cost at $11 million and said every dollar came from private philanthropy.

More than 1,300 individuals contributed, according to the nonprofit. Conte was one of them. Their gifts paid for a new LED system designed to replace hardware that had worn out after a decade on the bridge.

Villareal’s first version used about 25,000 bulbs, KQED reported, and it ran on the bridge every night for a decade before the hardware gave out. J-P Conte had supported it in 2012.

A San Francisco Foundation

The J-P Conte Family Foundation has its base in San Francisco. It was established in 2017. Its giving covers a range of causes from education to the environment.

Bay Area education programs are among them. SEO Scholars and 10,000 Degrees have both received his support over many years, and he sits on the advisory board of Sponsors for Educational Opportunity San Francisco.

How He Chooses Causes

Donors should start with what they care about, JP Conte wrote in a Forbes Business Council column in June 2025. He urged business leaders to “identify what you are passionate about supporting.”

Impact matters to him as well. “I also look for organizations where I know that I can have an outsized impact on furthering a specific mission,” he wrote.

The same column applied an investor’s habits to giving, from research before a gift to tracking results afterward. J-P Conte has written for Forbes Business Council since 2025.
